Our Stroller Wagon

It was a very sad day, but the day came where my kids didn’t fit in my beloved double stroller any more.

I had a serious obsession with our second hand Bumbleride Indie Twin and in good weather it was used several times a week, occasionally twice a day.

See my post here gushing about why I love side by side double strollers!
I knew that when baby #3 arrived, days of pushing all the kids around on a nice evening after work were not going to happen.

A lot of people asked why my 4.5 year old wouldn’t just walk…

We don’t have sidewalks in our neighborhood and we live on some super busy roads. I’m sure he will begin walking alongside us but the peace of mind of having him loaded up was nice.

Also…I like to walk to exercise and with the stroller I didn’t need to leave my kids to get my steps in! But, my young boys’ pace on a walk is not impressive. Meandering around the neighborhood doesn’t really do the same thing for my Apple Watch exercise ring.

There are other perks to having the kids loaded up too.

In the fall we would often bathe the kids first, put them in jammies and then go on the walk so we could take advantage of cooler later evening temps.

They would almost drift off being wheeled around like that all clean and fed and happy. I used to envy them! But, I’m not going to have them walk around the neighborhood in their pajamas and work up a sweat after a bath…

Finally—snacks and drinks and blankies! I walk in cold weather too. I just pile on the blankets. This isn’t possible with the kids walking beside me. Not to mention a young kid trying to keep up while carting around their goldfish and juice box…it’s not going to be the same.

SO if you can’t tell, I was seriously mourning the loss of this stroller. I almost kept it for Tom and the baby but the truth is Tom only weighs like 4 pounds less than Sam. So I figured my best bet was to sell it and buy a single for new baby and embrace this new stage of life we are in where the boys will need to learn to keep up!

Then one day on Instagram I came across the Keenz stroller wagon. It’s not specifically designed for 3 kids, but I found plenty of times when mom’s fit all three (or more) in when the older kid was tired of walking. This intrigued me.

They are pretty pricey and not super common on resale pages, but I found on about an hour and a half away (via ferry! check us out below) for $150 and decided to go for it. The next closest deal was $290 and 4 hours away so beggars can’t be choosers and we came away with a plum and navy combo…but I love the all black best!

I did happen to have this huge amount of leftover fabric and some batting and made a quick pillow. It matched pretty great!

I cannot tell you how much my kids love this thing. Instant SHRIEKS of delight from our 2 year old. He carried on allll about how much he liked his “new one” his “new one” over and over. Our oldest pointed out immediately he liked it better than the stroller!

I wish I could say I liked it BETTER, but I definitely do like it. It’s just not as easy on me as the side by side double stroller. This is mainly because it’s a wagon and is therefore longer than it is wide so the steer is not as good.

The cool thing, though, is that it pulls as easily as it pushes and I have found myself switching between the two!

A huge perk to this thing is it’s “playpen on wheels” quality. Our new baby will be born as the boys are almost 3 and 4.5 years old. Needless to say that first nap-filled year of baby’s life is probably going to involve time at a ball field of some sort. With the Keenz, the baby can just snooze! And it can pull wagon duty at the same time carting chairs, coolers, etc.

It has a huge sun canopy and I found a $6 mosquito mosquito net to add. I also have an old clip on fan that worked great for the boys last night when I attempted the muggiest walk ever.

I recommend the Keenz, but I don’t know if it’s an every day item. I think the reality is that I’m going to look for a second hand single stroller for when it’s just me at home with the baby.

But this stroller wagon has definitely extended the amount of time that I CAN cart around all my kids at one if I need to. Especially places like the Zoo or aquarium!

If you’re wondering where a baby would fit in between these big boys, there are Facebook pages that demonstrate all kinds of creative set ups. We are probably going to try the Binxy Baby shopping cart hammock so baby will lounge right in between the boys up over their legs.

All in all, I am really impressed with the idea of the stroller/wagon and glad we went on our adventure to pick it up! My kids have been playing with it inside too—last weekend it was a shop to sell play food out of it 🙂 I can’t say our old stroller ever entertained them like that!
